The deep sound of T’s voice floating through her apartment calmed the tempest storming through Amberly’s mind and body. His presence alone both eased and gave her a small measure of peace. He was in the same boat she was—up shit creek without a paddle and invisible to boot.

“I…can’t make it stop,” she said, looking down at her flickering hands. “And the doors. Oh, God, the doors…I ripped them off the hinges. T, make it stop!”

She didn’t see him coming, but her body cried out in relief the moment T picked her up from the floor, and cradled her in his strong arms. “I’m here, Sugar. We’ll figure this thing out. I promise.”

Amberly closed her eyes and buried her face into T’s broad shoulder. She reveled in his warmth, in his delicious, spicy smell, and gained comfort from his gentle touch.

“Sugar?”

“Mhmm…” she mumbled, enjoying the way his arms felt around her, and unwilling to open her eyes to face their grim reality. If she could hide away forever in his arms, she would.

“Baby, you might want to open your eyes.” His smooth voice held a hint of surprise, and despite her unease, she reluctantly went along with his request.

A loud gasp escaped her lips, her eyes widening in surprise. T was solid. And so was she.

Unable to control her excitement, Amberly held onto T’s face with both hands and kissed him soundly, delighting in the minty fresh taste of his lips and the warmth of his tongue. “What? How?” she asked, as she broke the kiss, searching T’s eyes for answers she knew he couldn’t possibly know.

“Shit, baby, I don’t know. But if I find out, will you kiss me like that again?” T chuckled as he set her down on her feet. Deep in thought, he paced back and forth in front of her, his forehead creased in concentration. He ran his hand up and down the back of his neck. “Maybe it has something to do with us being together. Or maybe…maybe it has to do with our emotions. My ‘abilities’ didn’t make an appearance until I stumbled onto the scene of an attack.”

Amberly blanched. “An attack?”

T gave her a sober nod. “Yeah. I was leaving the parking garage near my office when I heard this sick fucker’s voice in my head. Douchebag was plotting his attack on some helpless woman.”

Amberly’s head snapped back as she watched him, wide-eyed and incredulous. “You heard his…”

“His thoughts, yes. Thought I’d fucking lost my mind. But sure enough, I saw the woman he was after and things just snowballed from there. Shit, Sugar. I can see through things, and I’ve got the strength and speed of fucking Superman. That rock did something to us. It changed our genetic makeup or something. I’m serious, though—I think whatever is going on with us is tied to our emotions. When I’m with you, I’m relaxed, calm, and look,” he said, pointing to his clearly visible self. “You can see me.”

Amberly shrugged, and shook her head.
